Kansas State University | Justin Hall

The education, research, and testing center for the College of Human Ecology at Kansas State University, Justin Hall was built in 1960. It is dedicated to Margaret M. Justin who became the youngest dean of home economics in America in 1923.

As a LEED Gold Certified building, the sustainable elements with the addition and its construction include decreased use of potable water, minimal construction waste, at least 20 percent recycled content of building materials and use of building materials that were extracted, harvested, recovered or manufactured within 500 miles of Manhattan.

The Justin Hall renovation project added approximately 16,000 square feet, providing urgently needed classrooms and student services space. The new classrooms are state-of-the-art, enabling faculty members to teach students with today’s best technology. K-State’s College of Human Ecology has two high-tech auditorium-style classrooms seating 94 and 129 students, a smaller classroom, a student services center, a student collaborative workspace, two conference rooms and offices for the Institute for Personal Financial Planning.

A unique aspect of this project was that they gave fourth year interior design students at K-State the ability to work with the A&D firm to help design the space, giving them the hands-on experience most students would dream of having! The students redesigned classrooms, labs, offices and storage to reflect the college’s ongoing commitment to responsible stewardship of its resources. Students were also responsible for generating ideas and floor plans for the building’s addition.
